Isn’t it refreshing hearing from someone who you haven’t heard from in a while? Looking rejuvenated and like he hasn’t aged a bit, Donell Jones interviews with the Tom Joyner Morning Show in their Red Velvet Cake studio.
Even though Jones may have not constantly been in the mainstream or public eye, his popular 90s hit, “Where I Wanna Be,” was enough to establish and maintain loyal supporters, old and new, throughout the years. He returns to the music game with his new LP, “Forever,” showcasing his personal life experiences on the forefront.
Jones discusses his new album and explains that it is less of a compilation of featured artists and more of a representation of him. He says that he makes records that can stand alone without another artist jumping on the track.
“I just really feel like when you put on someone’s album you want to hear them,” says Jones. “I just go in every time and I try to make records that can stand alone without somebody on there. Then when you do a concert people expect that person to be there with you.”
With Jones’ seventh studio LP, the veteran knows how to cook up an album. “Forever” took about four months in the lab and has a mixture of up-tempos, club joints and ballads. Even with the diversity on this album, ballads seem to be his niche. “It’s just something about those slow records that get the crowd pumped up,” says the 40-year-old singer.
Jones says that he finds most of his fulfillment writing, producing and performing and when asked to choose between the three, he just couldn’t trade any of them in. Jones also gave some insight into his family life and the joy of parenthood with his daughter.
“She’s five. I’ve had a chance…with my other kids I really didn’t have a chance to be there because I was on the road a lot. This time I had a chance to be there throughout all the stages.”
Jones, who confesses that he is in love, fully explores all aspects of love on this new album and says, “Love is a beautiful thing…when it’s working.”
