As we continue October’s Throwback Thursday theme of R&B duets of the 80’s and 90’s, we set our sights on the year 1998 for an all-female collaboration.
Whitney Houston recruited Kelly Price and Faith Evans for “Heartbreak Hotel,” the lead single from her fourth studio album “My Love is Your Love.” Houston finds herself tired of checking in and out of the “Heartbreak Hotel,” writing her final farewell to ungrateful lover as her musical sisters back her decision to forward from the unhealthy relationship.
The platinum-selling duet became a huge hit for the three R&B songstresses. “Heartbreak Hotel” peaked No.1 on both Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Dance Club Songs chart. It also managed to reach No. 2 on the Hot 100 while doing well overseas – Australia (No.17), France (No.7) and United Kingdom (No.25) among others.
Along with chart-topping success, the song was nominated at the 42nd Grammy Awards for two awards including Best R&B Song. While “Heartbreak Hotel” didn’t win, it still acts as a reminder to ladies – “Check out time is after heartbreak No.1.”
