Whitney Houston has lent her voice to several soundtrack to films including The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale. However, after talking with a co-worker earlier this week, she reminded me of one particular soundtrack that goes perfectly with the holiday season – The Preacher’s Wife.
This week’s Throwback Thursday song is Houston’s cover of “I Believe in You and Me” by R&B group The Four Tops. Infused with Houston’s gospel chops and the contemporary sounds of R&B, it helped the ballad soar to the top of the charts.
The platinum-selling single peaked at No.4 on both Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and the Hot 100 and No.2 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary. “I Believe in You and Me” also saw success overseas – becoming a top 20 hit on the UK Singles chart. It was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards.
Relive the song with her performance from The Preacher’s Wife.
In 2010, Kim Burrell, performed the hit song at the BET Honors cermony as a tribute to Whitney. Recently, Ariana Grande covered the tune as well.
