While on tour with Drake in Paris, R&B songbird Jhené Aiko sat down with OFIVE TV for an interview. The “Bed Peace” singer chatted with the French media outlet to discuss many topics including her comparisons to several different artists, why she hasn’t collaborated with a female artist yet and her forthcoming debut album “Souled Out.”
On comparisons to other artists:
“People love to compare. I’ve heard [I am the] female Drake, female Frank Ocean, female Weeknd, female 2Pac…Everyone has this different view of who I am, but you don’t compare those people to each other. What that really means is that I am myself.”
On female collaborations:
“I’m not opposed to collaborating with female artists, it just has not come up yet. A lot of female artists don’t write their own music so it’s a little different when you’re working with people that are not writing their own music. Working with rappers, I feel like [I] compliment their style.”
On “Souled Out:”
“‘Souled Out” is like a child of mine. I feel like it’s literally a piece of my soul on each track. It’s definitely on a different level than anything else I’ve ever put out. Every song is more of me and where I’m at with my life now. I took my time with the vocals, lyrics, visuals. I’m excited for people to hear it and learn more about me, my story and my sound.”
Aiko released her latest song “My Afternoon Dream” as a birthday gift to her fans this week. Listen to it here.
