R&B’s new kid on block August Alsina is gearing up to release his debut album “Testimony” next month. While still on tour with 2 Chainz, the New Orleans native used his time in city of Charlotte to stop by Power 98 to promote his forthcoming project.
During the short interview, he tells listeners that “Testimony” is “not just my story, but my people’s story” and is a reflection of his life, culture and upbringing in New Orleans.
While Alsina does not look up to any current R&B musicians, he cites Lauryn Hill, Lyfe Jennings and Tank as inspirations. He also reveals that he is confused by the current state of R&B because it has a stigma. He feels that men today are scared to listen to it and show that [vulnerable] side of themselves, unlike in years past.
Towards the end of the interview, Alsina takes the high road and turns a Trey Songz beef question into a moment to send prayers and positivity to fellow R&B singer Chris Brown.
Last week, Alsina released his autobiographical second single, “Benediction” featuring rapper Rick Ross. His debut album features appearances from Jeezy, Pusha T, Fabolous and Yo Gotti. The album hits stores and digital retailers on April 15.
