Varner also chatted with “106 & Park” hosts Bow Wow and Keisha Chante about the direction of her new album. “It’s an open letter. It’s my heart. It’s my feelings. It’s my growth,” she said. “I talked about a lot of the coming-of-age things that girls go through and now I’m a young woman and going through different stuff, so you’ll hear about it.”
She also talked about her musical style, which she coins “trap jazz.” “It’s the product of a girl who grew up listening to Ying Yang Twins and Ella Fitzgerald,” she said. “If y’all know Ella Fitzgerald [and] Billie Holiday I’m inspired by both. So I like to keep the beat rocking, but I have those jazzy vocals. I can’t get away from that.”
Additionally, Varner dished on the “Music Matters” compilation album. “I love it because it’s supporting real music,” said Varner.
