Passionate singer Mali Music continues his promotional rounds for his major debut album “Mali Is…” with a personal interview with ESSENCE.
The celebration of his new release isn’t just a normal celebration for the gospel turned R&B singer. It’s a celebration of enduring one of the hardest tests he has experienced in the music industry. While “Mali Is…” may be his third album, but it’s his debut album as an R&B artist.
“The beginning of making this album was the greatest test of my [faith] because my second album, ‘The Second Coming,’ was extremely gospel,” says the singer. “But I had a great opportunity and I had an awakening that God didn’t just give me my music and my sound just to stay safe in churches and stuff like that.”
Mali Music has endured a lot of criticism for his change from gospel to R&B music and says this has been a huge test of his faith. He addresses the critics who bash his decision and says that God has only expanded his sound and entrusted him with the opportunity to do music on a major level. The crooner also admits that he has lost some of his gospel colleagues in the process, but he says it only helped him find God for himself and find a clear mission.
The musician also sang a selection of his song “Make It To Heaven” outdoors with his guitar backing him up. Watch the candid performance below.
