It looks like Lifetime Network will have to “Try Again.” After experiencing backlash from fans and Aaliyah’s family, the network announced on Sunday that Zendaya will not be portraying the late actress.
“We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold,” tweeted Lifetime’s communications team.
“Because it’s someone that I honor and I respect so much, it has to be 128 percent, especially for all her fans, including myself,” said Zendaya. “I didn’t feel like it was all the way there, so I didn’t want to do that. And when the time comes when it’s done right and it’s 100 percent, by all means, I will be the first person there ready to go.”
Aaliyah’s Family Releases Statement, Says Networks Want To Exploit Her Story For A Buck
Just a week ago, Aaliyah’s family issued a statement with their concerns about the Aaliyah biopic. They were very upset that they were not contacted about the film and believed a made-for-TV movie wasn’t good enough.
“Considering the magnitude of her fans’ affection alone, she deserves to have a tribute much more grand than a television network debut that won’t even consider the perspectives of those who were closest to Aaliyah,” said the Haughton family.
“Lifetime Television is trying to dictate the status of our heroes, our heroines and – in this case – our beloved Aaliyah. We implore everyone to call Lifetime Television, send emails and bombard social media so they know we demand respect for our cultural icons.”
The biopic was scheduled to film this summer. There is no word on the next steps.
