Mary J. Blige brought her soulful pipes to the 2014 American Music Awards on Sunday night with a stirring performance.
Introduced by Aloe Blacc and Ella Henderson, the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul made her grand entrance onto the main stage in an all-black outfit. With her churchy background singers moving the crowd with their bluesy humming, Blige sang the calming words to her Sam Smith co-penned single “Therapy.”
After the taping of the awards, Smith shared his appreciation of Blige for performing the song they co-wrote. “Such an honor to witness this legend sing one of my songs tonight,” tweeted Smith. “Thank you for guiding me and being such an amazing friend.”
Blige’s 13th studio album The London Sessions is available in stores in the UK today (Nov. 24). It will arrive in stores in the United States on December 2.
