The release date for K. Michelle’s sophomore album Anybody Wanna Buy A Heart is approaching soon. With the album available to stream, the Memphis native starts her promotional rounds with a Billboard.com Q&A session.
The “My Life” singer chats with the online publication about the difference between her new album and her debut effort Rebellious Soul. “It’s completely different,” says K. “I did Rebellious Soul in a different place in my life and I did it in New York, which is a very aggressive city. I did this album in L.A., which is a different vibe: very chill, very beautiful and edibles are legal.”
Unlike her first album, which sounded more urban driven, K.Michelle didn’t want her latest project to be genre based. She wanted to “focus on what feels good in the music.” “If I felt like singing country for the day, that’s what I did. If I felt like mixing R&B with rock, that’s what I did.”
She also pats herself on the back for improving her vocal abilities. “The vocals are absolutely amazing,” she says. “The people that hear it are shocked and say, ‘I didn’t even know you could sing like that. This doesn’t even sound like the same artist.’”
Her new single “Maybe I Should Call” has become a fan-favorite for its honest lyrics. The song was her “first record” she wrote for Anybody Wanna Buy A Heart. It was based on long distance relationship with a guy who had a child on the way, was therapeutic for the singer-songwriter. “I was so fucked up mentally,” she says about her relationship with her eight month lover. “The song was my way of saying ‘we need to stop talking.’ I was being so stubborn like, I’m going to do this because it’s real life what I’m going through.”
Although there is speculation that “Maybe I Should Call” is about actor Idris Elba, who worked on her Rebellious Soul musical, she has decided that “I’m not trying to focus in on that or hurt anybody. It’s just my life and what I’ve been through. When it comes to him, I’ll always love him and I wish him well in his craft and his family.”
