One platinum hit, two girl groups, two EPs and 12 singles later, and it is finally time for the release of Sevyn Streeter’s debut album, Girl Disrupted. She has given us songs that made us turn up, songs that made us think of our ex and songs that just vibe — which show her experiences and journey perfectly.
In celebration of her long-awaited debut, Rated R&B has compiled list of the things we love most about the budding star, who’s shining moment couldn’t have come soon enough:
1. Her vocals are solid.
Sevyn’s voice is quite distinctive and easily recognizable. With vocal jumps similar to Toni Braxton and vocal stacking that can sometimes mirror Brandy, she’s a singer that can actually, well, sing. Even on her turn-up songs, she can still give you a run or two that’ll make you say “Alright, Sevyn!” She displays impeccable vocal control and technique below in this 2013 acoustic cover of Aaliyah’s “Come Over.”
2. Her pen game is A1.
Sevyn has a knack for songwriting. Not only does she write all of her songs, but has also has written for other R&B artists that we love. Whether it’s Ariana Grande’s Top 10 single “The Way,” Fantasia’s Grammy-nominated album cut “Get it Right,” or Tamar Braxton’s brilliantly emotional “All the Way Home,” Sevyn’s pen game is both mighty and flexible.

3. She fights for what she believes in.
Last October, Sevyn’s feet were put to the fire after professional basketball team Philadelphia 76ers was denied the opportunity to sing the National Anthem just minutes before one of their home because of jersey that sported the phrase “We Matter.” She immediately took to Instagram to express her outrage and the story spread like wildfire, being picked up by media companies across the nation. Sticking to her guns and values, Sevyn gained the support of many, ultimately forcing the 76ers organization to issue an apology and reschedule her performance. The best part? She got to wear the same “We Matter” jersey; now that is a boss move!
4. She knows how to have fun.
One of Sevyn’s best assets an artist in this industry is her ability to connect with her fans. Her relatable life experiences and honest nature makes her a likable person, which, of course flows to her songwriting. Whether she’s twerking on Instagram or going up in the club with her celebrity friends, Sevyn’s natural, down-to-earth charm can’t help but make us smile.
Check out this fun collaboration she did with XO Necole below.
5. Her style is versatile.
Sevyn’s style has always been full of life, just like her personality. She typically goes for a quiet stunner aesthetic, along the lines of one of her musical influences Aaliyah. But don’t get it twisted: Sev can also rock the red carpet with the best of them, thanks to her keen eye and amazing figure.
Check out her collage of looks from the 2017 BET Awards weekend of festivities. I’m sure we can all agree that she rocks each and and every outfit well.
Girl Disrupted releases this Friday, July 7. Her singles “My Love For You,” “Fallen,” and “Before I Do” are available now on all digital platforms.
