Stream Kelela’s Debut Album ‘Take Me Apart’

After much anticipation, Kelela has finally released her first album, Take Me Apart. The 14-track offering takes listeners on a journey through two of Kelela’s past relationships.

Speaking on her inspiration behind Take Me Apart, Kelela said, “Despite it being a personal record, the politics of my identity informs how it sounds and how I choose to articulate my vulnerability and strength. I am a black woman, a second-generation Ethiopian-American, who grew up in the ‘burbs listening to R&B, jazz and Björk. All of it comes out in one way or another.”

Solange, who has collaborated with Kelela in the past, went on Instagram to share her support. “This album is EVERYYTHANG AND so are youuuuu🌹@kelelam *continues to play bluff, sos, and altadena 17,000 times in a row,” she wrote to her 3.1 million followers.

Take Me Apart will follow her 2015 EP Hallucinogen and her 2013 mixtape Cut 4 Me.

Stream Victoria Monet’s New EP ‘Life After Love, Pt. 1’

Singer-songwriter Victoria Monet turns her heartbreak into music on her latest EP, Life After Love, Pt. 1. On the nine-track project, Monet shares her feelings from a past relationship. With song titles like “Wish I Never Met You” and “No Good,” Monet definitely didn’t hold back on being transparent with her fans.

“This project is the direct result of an unfortunate breakup I had with someone that I loved very much,” Monet told Teen Vogue. “We were together for six years. He was someone I worked with, lived with, and even shared a birthday with. I thought we were soulmates and that I couldn’t live without him, but this project says otherwise.”

She continued, “Part 1 tells the story of the emotions I went through in order: the regret, insecurity, falling back in love, self-pleasure, crying, and coming to my senses. It’s very personal and anyone who has ever gone through a breakup can relate to at least one of these songs. I want to be clear though, that I didn’t want to release this project until I was sure that we both healed from it. As songwriters and artists we get a lot of attention and gratification when we write about the moments that have hurt us, and in turn, sometimes we’ll seek out more hurt so we can write more things that people like. I chose not to let this project do that. Out of respect, my ex and I have talked about the fact that I’m talking about the breakup publicly and have an understanding for the creative healing process.”
