Gerald Rivera, better known as Maxwell, is one of the smoothest R&B stars on the planet. Since 1996, the R&B legend has won over many hearts with his amazing vocals and timeless music. His latest album, blackSUMMERS’night, was released in July. While we are still jamming to his new music, we would also like to share five reasons why we love Maxwell.
He comes with surprises.
Over the last 20 years, Maxwell has only released five studio albums with some of them having a lot of time in between. He gives us just enough time in between not to forget him but also leaves us wanting more each time. We also love how he will surprise us with memorable performances at events such as the BET Awards and Essence Festival.
He has style.
There’s an elite group of R&B stars that not only have sex appeal on their songs but are able to keep a high level of style and class. Maxwell leads that pack. His smooth taste is also shown in his impeccable style. He’s arguably one of the best dressed men of R&B music, constantly appearing in magazine spreads and red carpets showcasing his fashion prowess. His personal style has evolved over the years from neo-soul cool to GQ fresh, and we love seeing the growth and versatility.
A soulful and full voice that makes us feel. You certainly remember that iconic falsetto on “This Woman’s Work” or that mellow voice that made everyone dance on “Sumthin, Sumthin.” It’s that distinctive voice that has kept Maxwell in the spotlight for more than 20 years.
Maxwell has received multiple nominations at the Grammys for his vocal performance in the R&B and Pop categories. He’s won the Best R&B Male Vocal Performance. It’s an honor that certainly he’s worthy of achieving because his voice has always been his primary talent as an artist. He’s become one of the major male vocalist of his generation and has set the bar high for those to come.
He connects with his fans.
When Maxwell isn’t releasing music he keep us engaged in what’s going with his life through social media. From posting photos of his trips on Instagram to inspiring the world with quotes on Twitter, Maxwell knows how to stay connected with his fans.
He also uses his star power to influence people in other ways. He’s recently spoke out about ending gun violence and other social movements like Black Lives Matter. He’s been able to leverage his career in music to become a global activist and humanitarian. He raised money for victims of the Haiti earthquake a few years ago, the place where his grandmother is from.
He bridges the gap between old school and new school
He’s usually singing bedroom records but he’s able to merge jazz and classic styles that you could listen to with your partner and parents. The R&B powerhouse keeps all audiences captivated with his music. When he does grace us with an album or new single, when he drops he doesn’t disappoint. His voice has earned him many awards and his fans love his classic style and one time has certainly has become a modern legend.
