Legendary rapper Kurupt and DJ Battlecat have teamed with Jane Handcock for their new single “Special,” out via Death Row Records.
The DJ Battlecat-produced track, which also features Blaqhoven, celebrates love at its highest. “Turning frowns upside down / Can’t get no better than this / Writing my bucket list / Living like a king and queen,” raps Kurupt.
Handcock appears in the chorus, where she sings ad-libs and harmonizes with Blaqhoven: “Girl, you’re special / Everything that we do / I’m puttin’ pressure / I’m talking about me and you / Yeah, you’re special / All the love I’m showing you.”
Speaking about his new collaboration, Kurupt shares, “Working with Jane Handcock is like a breath of fresh air because her voice is astronomical — just phenomenal. But her arrangements are just — wow. It’s like watching a master painter paint the picture. Picasso is in the room. You are there in the room. You are a fly on the wall. And Picasso is painting the picture. You watched it get painted — it’s just a breath of fresh air. It’s like, wow, being a piece of history. She’s a great. So it just makes you feel great just to be in the room with her as she works. She’s one of a kind.”
Handcock adds, “When Kurupt and Battlecat call, I’m on the way every time! ‘Special’ is exactly what the title is, SPECIAL.”
Handcock’s appearance on “Special” comes weeks after releasing her second album, It’s Me, Not You, on July 11 via Death Row. The project includes her Anderson.Paak-assisted single “Stare at Me,” plus a collaboration with BJ The Chicago Kid (“You”) and an appearance by Snoop Dogg.
“I created an album called It’s Me, Not You. It’s about owning every facet of who I am. Accountability is everything,” Handcock explained.
