Kelela Refuses to Look Away on ‘Idea 1’

The alt-R&B phenomenon wrote her new track while reading Octavia E. Butler's "Parable of the Sower"

What does it mean to create art when life feels turbulent? Alt-R&B singer Kelela is still figuring that out. Her new single “Idea 1” feels like a compilation of observatory notes.

Produced by Oscar Scheller, the soundscape begins with dreamy acoustics, later disrupted by an electric guitar that swirls in a haze, with Kelela’s ethereal vocals layered in wonder.

While lines like “It’s your loss, now I’m jaded” point to a withering relationship, there’s an underlying sense of weariness from hauling that baggage during a time where headlines compete for emotional bandwidth.

Kelela shared that the song was written while reading Octavia E. Butler’s 1993 postapocalyptic novel Parable of the Sower. “‘Idea 1’ is about what it feels like to exist in this climate — the weight of being expected to witness, absorb, and speak truth at a time when the world feels like it’s unraveling. That’s a particular kind of burden Black women know intimately,” said Kelela.

She added, “This song doesn’t offer answers, it just refuses to look away. Co-writing it with my best friend Janiva Ellis, hearing Oscar’s production give it shape, and then watching 91 Rules bring that tension to life visually feels like the beginning of a much larger conversation I’m ready to have.”

“Idea 1” is Kelela’s first single since releasing her live album, In The Blue Light, last year. Before that, she released her sophomore album, Raven, in 2023.

Of the latter project, she said, “I started this process from the feeling of isolation and alienation I’ve always had as a Black femme in dance music, despite its Black origin. RAVEN is my first breath taken in the dark, an affirmation of Black femme perspective in the midst of systemic erasure and the sound of our vulnerability turned to power.”
