Yaya Bey is readying the follow-up to last year’s Madison Tapes. The Queens, N.Y. native’s forthcoming release, The Things I Can’t Take With Me, is due to arrive on April 9 via the newly rebooted label Big Dada.
Speaking on the concept of her upcoming EP, Bey said in a press release, “[The album] is going to be about the journey home to self. But on the way, there’s all this shit I gotta let go of, just the things I can’t take with me.”
To formally introduce her next project, Bey loudly blows her own horn on the lead single “Fxck It Then.” Her sunlit vocals here blend with ease across the moodscape of sumptuous trumpet playing and retro sound accessories.
As far as the song’s lyricism, Bey finds herself bouncing back from a breakup unaffected and sums up her resilience to her recognizing her worth as a woman who’s above average.
Bey trusted Black independent director Morgan B. Powell to bring the nostalgic vision of “Fxck It Then” to life. She described the lo-fi clip as an “ode to hood joints.” Watch it above.
