Following her remarkable vocal performance in Lifetime’s Whitney biopic, Deborah Cox lands a new gig. The Toronto native will make her return to Broadway next spring to star as legendary performer Josephine Baker.
Titled Josephine, the musical is inspired by Stephen Papich’s book Remembering Josephine. It will highlight Baker’s stint as the star of the Folies Bergere in Paris between 1939-45, her scandalous affair with Swedish Crown Prince Gustav VI and her heroic service in the French Resistance during World War II.
Cox says she has been following Baker since she saw the 1991 HBO film The Josephine Baker Story with Lynn Whitfield. “I was so taken with her persona, her activism, the kind of artist and person she was,” Cox said. “We’re trying to convey something big and trying to get the rest of the world to understand that vision.”
Cox has starred on Broadway in “Aida” and the recent revival of “Jekyll & Hyde.”
Josephine is slated to debut at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Florida on April 27, 2016 and will run through May 29, 2016.
