Fast forward. It’s 2012, you released your debut single “Break Me Down” earlier this year. Can you tell us more about that record?
2011 was a really rough year for me. It was when I lost my dad at the top of the year, I lost the group – we just realized that it was time to let it go, I lost my manager of nine years from a heart attack. So, everything that I had known around me that was constant was no more. I was in a really dark place, trying to figure out if I wanted to continue – if I even still had the strength to continue because I was so unsure and depressed.
“Break Me Down” kind of kind of effortlessly. I was pulling from a place of inspiration. I needed to tell myself “you cannot be broken down.” It was probably the one of the best decisions that I’ve made to release that song because it spoke to me and it gave me what I needed to not give up.
You’re working on your debut EP “A Brave New World.” Can you share any details about that project?
There is going to be some really cool features. It’s basically going to be a hybrid of singing and rapping – really big sounding records. I’m in the works right now, putting some really cool things in place…I’m excited, I’ll just leave it like that. It’s almost like now I’m getting confirmations that “Break Me Down” is doing what I needed it to do because it’s getting the ears of people I need to listen to Brave. Now, they’re coming on board
Is there are release date for the EP or are you taking your time?
I’m taking my time with it. As an artist, we can get antsy and we want the world to hear it, but I’m definitely taking my time with it. It will definitely be [released] within the next eight to nine months.
Are you releasing it independently or is there a record deal in the works?
It’ll definitely be released through a major label.
What do you want people to take away from listening to “A Brave New World”?
I’m really talking to my girls. I’m really speaking to them in a very encouraging, but a non-preachy way. I’m really talking to my girls in a sense of to sustain courage – there is another way to love in a relationship, there is another way that you can get on with having to compromise who you are. At the same time, I’m also that fun girl. So there’s going to be records on there where you are going to be dancing.
If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring female artist, what would it be?
Be honest with who you are and showcase that. If you’re going to fail, fail at that then trying to be something that you’re not.
Looking back to your earlier days in the music industry, what’s one thing that you’ve learned?
Never ever take “no” as an answer. I don’t know how many times I’ve been told “no.” Any type of word that sounds resistant, you never take that seriously. To me, when I hear those types of things, I take it as a pause. It gives me a moment to think how to get a “yes.”
