On Thursday (March 6), old and new school soul singers Janelle Monáe, Patti LaBelle, Ariana Grande and other “Women of Soul” lent their talented voices to a special concert celebrating the history of female soul singers at the White House.

There were two standout performances that shocked not only the viewers at home but President Obama and First Lady Michelle who sat in awe the audience.

The first one came from the 20-year-old pop/soul songstress Ariana Grande. She commanded the attention of the Obama’s with her beautiful cover of Whitney Houston’s 1993 hit “I Have Nothing.” Before singing her rendition of the song, she shared a special message about the music icon, “I’m going to sing a song by a woman who’s inspired me endlessly since I was a little girl.”

Following her performance of Houston’s “I Have Nothing,” she sung “Tattooed Heart,” lifted off her debut album “Yours Truly.”

The third and last memorable performance came from Grande with the help of Jill Scott, Melissa Etheridge, Patti LaBelle, Tessanne Chin and Janelle Monáe. They came together to perform their fitting version of Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary.” It was amazing.

To see the complete “Women of Soul: In Performance at the White House” concert,  tune into PBS on April 7 at 9 p.m.
