R&B heartthrob Tank is feeling good these days and is expressing his happy feelings through his new uptempo R&B sound.
The “Please Don’t Go” singer stopped The Hot 97 Morning Show this week, sans his TGT bandmates, to talk about his new music, collaborating with Drake and how he crafted the perfect record for K. Michelle.
On his new sound:
“I’ve been trying to find my groove as a tempo artist for 14 years. Now with this style and musicianship and these live strings and horns…that’s what I do in my sleep. The foundation of [my] music doesn’t have to be so locked in, [it] has to have potential to reach other people. Sad music [has] been my staple so now I’m on the brighter side of things. I’m feeling good about myself.”
On Drake collaboration:
“We got on the phone and he was like , ‘I’m a big fan. Sex, Love & Pain is one of my favorite albums. If you ever need me, let me know.’ So I sent him a record called “Celebration” and he got on it. [It] should’ve been a single…he did his part, but then we had to get into the clearing process and that normally messes up all the momentum.”
On Writing for K. Michelle:
“I did a K. Michelle record called “You Got The Right One.” The song almost didn’t make the album. I went to a concert, [the audience] sang it word for word. She’s everything that you see. So I wrote the song based on [what she told me was going on with her] and the people gravitated to it because it’s real.”
Earlier this month Tank premiered his new song “You’re My Star,” the upbeat, 80’s inspired track is the first single from his next solo album “Stronger.”
