5 Reasons To Love Trey Songz' 'Trigga' Album

When is the last time you heard an R&B album so refreshing as if a flow of fresh, cool water poured into the music industry? An album that breathes life into the music-phere as if hitting the refresh button on your computer or smartphone web browser. An album that presents a fresh perspective on not just the industry, but society in general and progresses the treasured genre. Ok, stepping off the soapbox, Trey Songz’ sixth studio album, “Trigga,” is an album that produces this experience. Although available for stream previous to its release via its partnership with MTV, I was still compelled to cop the album the morning of July 1. It was like fireworks in July. Streaming his album and listening to the whole album did not dilute his work like in most cases for most music artists. The album’s strong quality and musical presence only captivated me to get the album more and had me itching to clutch my hands on a physical copy of the album as each day inched by with more and more excitement and anticipation. “Trigga” is fully loaded and ready to dispatch a music bomb into the atmosphere killing the music game with each track stirring up passion in the gut of your stomach for the genre. “Mr. Steal Your Girl” may have not had instant success or mega-fame at the start of his career, but his gradual success slowly but surely marinated his growth and superb artistry. Here are five reasons to love Songz’ sixth studio album “Trigga.” 1. Great Production From start to finish, “Trigga,” exudes a strong musical presence with the help of its A-list production roster. This distinguished roster strikes you with the infectious spirit of R&B music leaving you shaking your head in astonishment of the quality of produced work. Opening the album with a bang, Songz delays no time to hit us with a fire-produced track by Dun Deal. The impressive track puts a reverse spin to the cliche saying “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.” As a result of “Trigga”’s superb production catalogue, Songz earned a No. 1 hit single “Na Na” making it the first No. 1 track for its lyrical composer Samuel “Sam Hook” Jean. Other mega producers that composed the album are DJ Mustard, Mike WiLL Made It, Soundz and wrapping up the album (standard edition) with a crossover hit by Da Internz “Change Your Mind.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b96Zuye5p-s If you have the deluxe version, the album still is concluded gracefully with what can possibly be a smash single labeled “Mr. Steal Your Girl,” declaring how he will replace a man’s spot just as he looks to replace the top spot in R&B. 2. Cohesive and Flows Well I must admit, when Songz released his first single “Na Na” followed by “Smart Phones” and then “Foreign,” I was unsure of the direction or musical sound he was going with for his sixth project. Now hearing the album in its entirety, I was schooled. Its direction was clear and the cohesiveness of the album was solid. The album appears to have two phases. It kicks off with full speed starting with the upbeat tracks all the way up until the tenth track. It is at track 10 where the singer slams his breaks and slows it down with his second single “Smart Phones.” From then on the crooner keeps it at a slower pace (for the most part) preventing a mixture of cluttered tempos back and forth, giving the album a smooth sailing flow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0ZJVcJAD9w 3. Plethora of Stand-Out Tracks As mentioned before, Songz started off the album with a banger and one of the album’s most notable tracks “Cake”--but that isn’t the only song that highlights the album. Songz has a number of tracks that display societal views on relationships and ways of living in this current generation. These tracks include “Disrespectful” assisted by Mila J (which puts morals to the side when it comes to the act of cheating), “Yes, No, Maybe” (a blunt, unfiltered track displaying regretful feelings of a relationship that is on the verge of ending) and “Y.A.S.” (an interesting track of the emotions of a fed up woman). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r9K_8CvorI 4. Great Features This album has a number of features which complement the album and gives it its appeal. The good thing about the features on this album is that the artists fit the sound of the track in which they are featured on. Admittedly, when hearing some of the featured artists such as Mila J and Ty Dollar $ign, I was skeptical of their fit on the album. Once hearing their contribution to the album, I was schooled once again as their vocal additions gelled very well on the track in which they represented. His first featured track "Touchin, Lovin" is assisted by Nicki Minaj who adds lyrical rawness to the catchy track. On Mila J's assisted track "Disrespectful," the Los Angeles singer adds a nice smooth female vocal layer to the track as the two singers duet back and forth. Her vocal swag matches the vibe of the song perfectly. Ty Dollar $ign contributes to the album on the sixth track entitled "Dead Wrong" where his vocals adds a hip-hop, R&B mesh giving the track a hip Future-like vibe. Also making a hot cameo on the album is rapper Juicy J on a club anthem entitled "Late Night" produced by Mike WiLL Made It. Displays Musical Growth Overall, the album shows gradual growth vocally, lyrical and creatively. Songz' vocal ability is highlighted in songs such as “Smart Phones” and “Mr. Steal Your Girl” showcasing his falsetto capabilities. Creative growth is shown with his lyrical content concepts and his added skit commentary in songs like the introduction to “Smart Phones” and “Yes, No, Maybe.” Songz has also shown growth as a writer on his project writing and co-writing every track on the album.
