Dylan Sinclair Releases New EP ‘No Longer in the Suburbs’

Dylan Sinclair No Longer in the Suburbs

Five Stone Records

Two singles released earlier this year pointed toward Dylan Sinclair’s most recent project, No Longer in the Suburbs. Like his previous EP, Proverb, the eight-track set was released independently under the Five Stone Records imprint.

“No Longer in the Suburbs really represents the search for that stimulation, that faster life or those experiences that when you’re old, you get to look back on them and be like, yeah, I did that and with people that I love,” explains Sinclair.

Stretch braking from a train is heard in the opener, “Rational,” giving the allusion that he’s traveling from somewhere. He could be on the run from his extracurricular moves that caused pain to someone. Here, when he sings of freedom and a former life based on a previous year, he looks to have his shortcomings justified.

Song two, “Open,” is the focus track from No Longer in the Suburbs. He debuted a music video to accompany the EP’s rollout.

This number is followed by “Too Soon,” where Sinclair’s favor in cloudy croons is evidently a clue he’s a fan of Daniel Caesar.

Back to back are the singles — “Lifetime” and “Suppress” — Sinclair issued ahead of No Longer in the Suburbs.

“I’m in It” is one of the EP’s best grooves. It’s weighed with clinking beats and a piano that aids Sinclair in his sit down with a lady rattled with thoughts of unfaithfulness on his part.

Sinclair keeps up his do-right attitude on the vulnerable, guitar-etched “How Dare I” before he closes the EP with his last plea, “If You Feel Like Leaving.”

Ahead of the JUNO Awards, where Deborah Cox will be honored, Sinclair will perform a showcase on May 12 at CBC Music’s JUNOfest. He’ll return to the stage on July 7 to play at the Montréal Jazz Festival. Tickets are available here.
