The Sy’Rai Smith takeover is in full effect. As teased, the daughter of the legendary Brandy has shared her new single, “On My Own.”
The song was co-produced by Jared “ReezyTunez” Thorne and Keyz Bridgez. She co-wrote the track with Eric Bellinger.
Lushly singing over an intricate drum pattern, Sy’Rai is in great vocal form. She expresses being in a relaxed mood to excel at what is already destined for her life: sheer perfection.
She sounds comfortable as ever with moving at a gradual pace, not wanting to be blind to hidden and fantastic possibilities that can be missed by going in a hurry.
“Think I finally arrived / It was so far from luck / Greatness is up to me / And I’m making that choice / I’ve been taking my time / And I ain’t in a rush / I don’t wanna miss anything / It’ll cost me too much,” Sy’Rai sings.
“On My Own” is a title that Brandy seemingly manifested in a 2020 interview with Rated R&B when she touted their b7 collaboration “High Heels.” “She’s a beautiful talent. She’s coming into her own and I’m just here to support her in every way possible,” Brandy said.
“On My Own” is Sy’Rai’s lead single from her forthcoming debut EP, executive produced by Brandy, who also vocal produced every track.
In a recent interview with Ty Cole of BET, Sy’Rai went in-depth about the sound of the EP. “I’ve seen my mom in the studio all my life and I’m a perfectionist like her so it has to sound correct,” she said. “I stack like crazy – a lot of melodic, driven music because people like melodies. I have that Brandy sound that people try and get – I can do it and it’s in my genes to be like her. Not trying to be copied but people call me the ‘New Testament’ so people will be surprised by what I’m coming up with.”
Last year Sy’Rai teamed with Brandy for “Nothing Without You,” a duet that appeared on Disney+’s Cheaper By the Dozen soundtrack. Before that, as mentioned above, she joined Brandy on “High Heels” from Brandy’s acclaimed b7 album.
Sy’Rai recently was featured in MTV’s new docuseries, Family Legacy, which includes interviews with children of legacy musicians. The docuseries, which premiered on April 25, can be watched on Paramount+.
