Australian R&B singer Boy Soda has unleashed his debut album, SOULSTAR, via Warner Music.
The 13-track ensemble lavishes in live instrumentation, pulling from influences from R&B, soul, jazz and funk.
“There was this communal feeling that we were all doing something really incredible and special,” Boy Soda shares. “It felt over-indulgent being able to have that many live instruments. I’m very aware of the rarity and the privilege to be able to make that album. But hey, who better than to call on your talented mates to make something special happen.”
SOULSTAR is a cosmic journey into the world of Boy Soda, where he balances the profound with the playful. He opens up about weighty topics like the struggle of self-compassion (“My Body”), grief over losing a loved one (“Selfish”), post-traumatic growth (“Never the Same”) and intergenerational healing (“A Father’s Heart”), while exploring joyous moments of flirtation (“Hit the Road!”), late-night passion (“Slippery”) and a meaningful friendship (“Platonic & Sacred”).

Songs like “Lil’ Obsession” and “Find A Way” acknowledge the end of a relationship, while “PM” explores a fleeting romance. “Hit you in the PM ‘cause I know you provide relief / Tell me how convenient you only ever hear from me / In the PM,” he sings in the latter track.
Leading up to SOULSTAR, Boy Soda dropped the singles “Lil’ Obsession,” “Blink Twice,” “4K” featuring Dean Brady and “Never the Same.”
Regarding the contemplative “Blink Twice,” he noted, “I was really thinking about my relationship between thought and belief and how they were influenced by the things I consume. I think it’s so easy to find yourself regurgitating phrases you don’t understand but have seen a TikTok about and find yourself lost in this place where none of your thoughts are your own.”
