Genre-defying artist BLK ODYSSY‘s fourth album, Mood Control, was finely tuned to clear emotional cache.
“This record is called Mood Control. I made it to remind people that sound can change how we feel, how we think, and how we move,” explains BLK ODYSSY. “Every song carries an emotion, a frequency tied to that emotion. The world’s been stuck in noise and static, the media’s got us numb to truth and desensitized to what’s real. So we made a record that plays like a radio station, one that unconsciously rewires that in the minds of its listeners. It’s a broadcast no one was ever supposed to hear.”
The 10-track project, out via Earthchild/EMPIRE, includes the previous broadcasts “Waves” and “Heartbreak.” Regarding the former, he explained, “‘WAVES’ is a hypnotic love song disguised as a transmission of mind control.”
Meanwhile, “Heartbreak” applies the themes of love and loss to the state of the world. “I was feeling this heavy sense of division in the world, like everyone had lost empathy, compassion, and patience for one another,” he noted. “It felt like our whole country had a broken heart. This song became a way for me to let go of all that noise, reconnect with what makes us human, and to find unity in the things that bring us together instead of our differences.”
Mood Control follows 1-800 FANTASY, released in 2024. Regarding the latter, BLK ODYSSY explained, “1-800 FANTASY has been the most exciting and liberating album for me to work on. Between exploring a new level of storytelling and also a new world of production and songwriting, this record has been a new chapter for me as an artist.”
He added, “It felt like if Paramore or Blink 182 got in the studio with OutKast in the early 2000s. That’s where this record brought me. It feels fresh but it also strikes a cord of nostalgia, which is what made it special for me.”
