New Orleans’ newest resident Solange Knowles keeps her name in the headlines — all for good reasons.
From her interesting fashion choices to being the head of her own indie label, she knows how to keep folks talking. She continues to be the center of attention in the latest spread of Harper’s Bazaar.
Aside from showing off her incredible fashion sense, the “True” artist discusses several topics such as her career in its beginning stages where she doesn’t regret “Solo Star,” her debut project.
“I still stand behind the stuff I did early on, but I was on a record label and I didn’t have a lot of creative control,” said Solange. “Another side of that is just being young and having bad taste. There was plenty of that too.”
While being a solo artist was dear to Solange’s heart, it wasn’t so much to her parents. “My parents constantly tried to talk me out of being an artist,” she said.
“They had gone through the whole journey with my sister [Beyoncé] and just wanted me to have a normal teenage life.”
Her plans for a solo career took a left turn when she became pregnant with her son, Julez and got married at 18. Now divorced, she’s gained many life experiences all before the age of 27.
“In a lot of ways, emotionally and mentally, I feel far older than 27,” she said. “Just going through a marriage and a divorce—which I essentially did by 21—will give you an insane amount of perspective on life.”
