After re-introducing herself to the world with her single “Dumb” and releasing episode one (“Culture”) of her web-series “Reality Show,” Jazmine Sullivan issues viewers episode two, “Spirit.”
The “Fear” artist starts the second installment of her series by opening up about her mindset before and after her music hiatus in 2010. “When I took my break in 2010, I was really in a bad place in life,” she says candidly. “I was in an unhealthy relationship. I basically left my city, my family and friends and I just felt really alone.”
With her 2010 release titled “Love Me Back” she admits that, “When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t love who was looking back. At the time, I couldn’t find anything loveable about me or my life.” Sullivan hoped that she could shake off the insecurities surrounding her life at that time and return back to the studio but she realized it wasn’t that easy. “I just couldn’t handle feeling the way I did and having to pretend for a camera or a crowd, so I broke.”
From there, things got even worse for the “Holding You Down” songstress. “Instead of taking the time to look inward, I turned to a [another] bad relationship, which was a mistake,” she said. “After the relationship ended, I was left basically back in the same spot I was before.” She remembers being trapped in that dark space and even considered “doing drugs,” she says. “It sounds stupid now but for some reason I thought it was the answer and I thought it could help in some kind of way.”
Even though she realized the dangers of substance abuse, she recalls “being lost and in so much pain” and was willing to try anything to ease the pain. However, she informs her followers that she didn’t go through with abusing drugs. She took a different approach. “I decided instead of trying to escape that way, I would focus on building my faith in God,” she says. “I realized I had been trying to do things on my own for a long time and because of that it left me in places that I never thought I would end up.”
Now, with a positive outlook on life the sultry singer says “I feel like I’m at a place where I’m starting to see myself for who I am. I’m starting to love myself like God loves me and I’m so grateful I’m in a healthier place in my life.”
