Kem on His Music: ‘I Try To Keep It Fresh Without Compromising My Sound’

R&B veteran Kem has a lot to be thankful for this year. His new album “Promise to Love,” debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, selling 52,086 in its first week of sales.

The “Love Calls” singer doesn’t take the success of his new project lightly – especially since it took him four years to create. Yet, he’s comfortable with the breaks in between albums because he wants to “make sure songs are intact,” he told Billboard. “I try to keep it fresh without compromising my sound or what I know my listeners want to hear.”

Kem places himself in the category with the likes of Ledisi, Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton, who he commends for “keeping the light on for R&B.”

Although the “Can’t Stop Loving You” crooner hasn’t achieved mainstream success in his respective music field, he’s content with his place in R&B. “I think I am right where I’m supposed to be,” he said. “And I think that there’s something about knowing that everybody doesn’t know who I am or what goes on in my wheelhouse because that means I have more people to reach. There’s more room for growth. And I’m encouraged by that.”

Kem’s new album “Promise to Love” is available in stores and online for digital downloads. His latest single “Nobody,” the follow-up to his lead single “It’s You,” is making its way up the urban adult contemporary radio chart.
