Pharrell Williams’ year keeps getting better and better. After his single “Happy” helped him become the first African-American artist to top the Hot 100 chart since Rihanna’s 2012 hit “Diamonds,” he makes more history in music.
According to The Official Charts Company, his carefree song “Happy” dethrones Robin Thicke’s feel-good anthem “Blurred Lines,” and becomes the most downloaded track ever in the U.K.
Since its release in June 2013, the Oscar-nominated track has tallied 1.62 million in digital downloads. Meanwhile, Thicke’s Grammy-nominated single has sold a mere 1.59 million in digital sales.
Williams shared his humble appreciation about the recent news. “I would just like to say thank you, first and foremost, to the people, because the charts are determined by them,” he said to OfficialCharts.com. “I have a lot to be thankful for because they’ve chosen these things and it’s resulted in “Happy” being what it’s become.”
