Album Review: Teedra Moses – ‘Cognac & Conversation’

It’s been over a decade since Teedra Moses released her critically acclaimed debut album, Complex Simplicity, via TVT Records. The New Orleans native kept her fans’ attention over the years with a few mixtapes and an EP.

Now, she has unleashed her highly awaited sophomore album, Cognac & Conversation via Shanachie Entertainment. Speaking on her new album, Moses explains, “Cognac & Conversation is music that’s meant to be light-hearted at times while deep in other moments. It’s meant to be comforting and relatable but at the same time thought-provoking and inspiring. The conversation and vibe could be with yourself, the homegirls, or your lover.”

On Cognac & Conversation, Moses weighs in on the many facets of love. She makes it clear money can’t buy her love on the Rick Ross-assisted tune “All I Ever Wanted.” “F*ck your money / ‘Cause money can’t buy my heart,” she sings on the “Adventures in the Land of Music” sampled track.

With songs like “International Playboi” “Get It Right” and “That One (featuring Anthony Hamilton),” the Miami native reminds men that she is too mature to play their love games. She’s at the point in her life where she needs a man who knows what he wants and knows how to love her equally.

Moses’ voice shines on “Only U” featuring 3d Na’tee, where she proves she is highly committed to the man she loves. Her smooth and silky vocals glide over the mellow beat as she sings, “I won’t waste another breath on someone who that isn’t you.” It’s definitely a standout track with potential to really impact the urban adult contemporary market.
Another standout track, “Beautiful Chaos,” paints the picture of being in a complicated relationship. “What we got, something unexplainable / A spark to behold ’til we burnin’ each other’s souls / It’s beautiful chaos,” Moses croons.

She embraces her sexual side on “Skin Diver.” The sensual track, produced by Boddhi Satva, is sure to be added to a few love-making playlists. “You wanna swim deep / Fall in deeper,” Moses sings over a slow, tribal beat.

Moses does some soul-searching toward the end of the album. On “Yesterday Ain’t Tomorrow” she deals with past heartache while remaining optimistic about finding real love. “No Regrets” may be her most personal track on the album. On the piano and bass-driven track, Moses recounts past events in her life for which she doesn’t have any regrets. “Lord I’m so grateful for all you’ve done,” she sings.

Overall, Cognac & Conversation is a decent album by Teedra Moses. She stayed true to her sound, which her fans will hopefully appreciate. Purchase it in stores or iTunes today.
