Grammy award-winning singer Monica has teamed with AT&T for its 28 Days campaign, which honors African-American achievements  in the past and present. Monica is featured as a modern-day trailblazer alongside people like Paul Brunson, a Match-maker and Relationship Coach.

As part of the campaign, Monica was interviewed about her personal keys to success. In the interview, she discusses the qualities of an inspiring leader, who she turns to for counseling and more.

Which qualities are necessary to be an inspiring leader?
Humility. When one forgets that we are all one in the same, or feels they are above or beyond or not in touch with something, you lack the understanding to give necessary leadership. If I feel I can’t come back to a certain place or be in a certain place, how can I genuinely give of myself to the young ones that are coming behind me, who have lived what I lived and seen what I seen. You can’t do that if you lose your humility.

Whom do you turn to for counsel?
My mom has always been the most influential person in my life because at one point it was just us—her, myself and my brother … I realized how important her strength was. I learned to pray and be steadfast in what I believe in and know that whatever is imperfect about me I was created by the most high.

Which tech tools help you accomplish your professional and personal goals?
My devices are very important to me. My phones are my connection to my children. I wouldn’t let the road, my career or anything else separate me from them for very long. Technology helps me get by the days and do what I need to do—and stay motivated. We get a chance to see each other and interact. They get to see what Mommy is doing when she’s away.

The first step to being a part of the solution is …
Forgiving all of the things that have already taken place. When you try to be a part of solutions but you’re still angry, you don’t fully think things through. Another part of [being] the solution is to unite. You can’t halfway love your brother and sisters and fight for them. You have to love them whole heartedly and enough to step out and put yourself out there to really be a part of the solution to the countless problems we have right now.
