After a six-year hiatus, VH1’s Hip Hop Honors, a special program dedicated to honoring many legends throughout the history of the genre, returned on Monday night. The ceremony celebrated the impact of female hip-hop icons including Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott, Salt-N-Pepa and Lil’ Kim. It featured performances from the likes of Lil’ Mama, Teyana Taylor, Keke Palmer, Ashanti and many more. The one stand-out performance was the tribute to Missy Elliott with Fantasia, Tweet and Monica.
Fantasia kicked off the tribute with her 2004 hit single “Free Yourself,” which was co-written by Missy Elliott. Donning a beautiful white dress, Fanny delivered an emotionally-packed performance. The songstress belted out the song with the crowd singing (and Missy herself) singing right along with her.
Following Fantasia was Monica, who performed her hit “So Gone,” which was written and produced by the Missy as well. Closing out the individual performances, Tweet performed her signature hit “Oops (Oh My),” which was co-written by Missy.
The tribute did not end with Tweet, as the trio got together for the performance of “Lady Marmalade,” the 2001 Grammy-winning song Elliott produced for the film Moulin Rouge!
