Jamila Woods has teamed up with Vevo to produce a live performance of her songs “Eartha” and Betty.” Both tracks appear on Woods’ latest album, Legacy! Legacy!, which is out now.
Backed by a small band and a background singer, Woods delivered a beautiful acoustic rendition of the two enriching songs.
“Eartha” was inspired by singer/actress Eartha Kitt. “With this song, I was thinking of her as my guardian angel,” Woods told Pitchfork. “If she was to advise me on my current situation or how I think about love and relationships, what would she give me to say? She’s just so sure of herself.”
“Betty (for Boogie)” was inspired by Chicago-based dance teacher Boogie McClarin, who Woods credits as the person who taught her about house music. She explained, “I didn’t learn about it until I came back and saw Boogie’s workshops; she gives oral histories as she’s teaching the dance. She talks about the desegregated parties at The Warehouse, and how that was one of the only places where you could meet people of different races and backgrounds.”
