So much for a comeback single. Nine-time Grammy Award winner John Legend’s new single, “Who Do We Think We Are” featuring rapper Rick Ross could be in jeopardy after Ross referenced ‘date rape’ on a song called “U.O.E.N.O,” late March.
The R&B veteran recently talked with Yahoo! Music about his new single and his thoughts on Ross’ media backlash. “I don’t know what the impact will be,” said Legend about having Rick Ross on his new single.
Even as hip-hop continues to push the envelope on controversial issues, Legend believes rape is too touchy to rap about.
“People are so sensitive about the issue of rape right now,” he says. “You got politicians talking about it, you have the Steubenville case, you have all these things happening.”
While it’s not clear how the rapper’s latest media uproar will affect the record’s success, Legend sticks by his friend and hopes other MC’s learn from his backlash.
“He’s still my friend, and I still respect him,” Legend says. “I think him apologizing was the right thing to do, and hopefully we can move forward, and hopefully nobody else will rap about rape or make light of rape in the future. It’s something that every rapper should avoid.”
John Legend’s latest single “Who Do We Think We Are” is available now on iTunes. The song will appear on Legend’s upcoming album, Love in the Future.
