Today marks the 11th anniversary of the death of Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes, one-third of the multi-platinum selling girl group TLC. In honor of her memory, this week’s Throwback Thursday song is the trio’s 1992 smash hit, “What About Your Friends.”Written by Dallas Austin and Lisa Lopes, the third single from TLC’s debut album, Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip dished on the value of learning who your real friends through the good and bad times.

After TLC’s first two singles “Ain’t 2 Proud to Beg”  and “Baby-Baby-Baby” scored top ten’s on Billboard Hot 100, “What About Your Friends” peaked at No. 7, making it the trio’s third consecutive top ten on that chart. The certified gold-selling single also reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles (now Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs).

In recent news, VH1 has begun filming a TLC biopic on the career of the R&B/Hip-Hop group. Keke Palmer was casted as Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas,  Drew Sidora as Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins and rapper Lil’Mama as Left Eye. No  release date has been announced for the film.
