Album Review: Chrisette Michele – ‘Better’

It has been three years since Chrisette Michele released an album. Last week (June 11), the R&B songstress delivered her fourth album titled “Better” via Def Jam Recordings.

With “Better,” she created songs and a sound that was very much reminiscent of her first two projects, keeping a more adult R&B sound. She also takes us on a clear journey through the lyrics of each song. With the sultry intro, “Be in Love,” it’s clear that Michele is emotionally in a great place and ready to experience the true essence of love.

She continues this concept throughout the album with songs such as “A Couple of Forevers,” “Love Won’t Leave Me Out,” and the title track. These songs take you on a journey of love and the longing for it. Vocally, Michele pours our lush soulful vocals that are at time heart wrenching yet subtle leaving you wanting more.

While there are many high notes with this album, some may be disappointed to find that there are four songs from her mixtape “Audrey Hepburn: An Audiovisual Presentation.”  Though catchy songs such as the 2 Chainz-assisted “Charades” may leave fans whom have already heard it hitting the skip button.

All in all, “Better” showcases all of the best parts of Chrisette Michele: musical honesty, vocal power, and real soul.

Standout tracks: Love Won’t Leave Out, Better, Charades, and Ten Foot Stilettos
