After premiering “Dance Apocalyptic” last week, Janelle Monáe has released its official music video.
Monáe shows off a new look in the video, rocking a new, more laid-back hairstyle and wardrobe. Wendy Morgan directed the video; she also directed Monáe’s “Tightrope” video.
“But I really, really want to thank you for dancing ’til the end / You found a way to break out / You’re not afraid to break out / But I need to know if the world says it’s time to go (Dance apocalyptic) / Tell me, will you break out?” Monáe sings.
Speaking on her hairstyle in the video, Monáe told Washington Post, “It’s all according to my soul clock, whenever I want to change, whenever my soul clock says try this or try that, that’s when I do it. A bold red lip mixed with black and white, I try to keep that.”
She added, “I wanted to have more fun in the videos. I wanted to pay homage to the female rock star and create her. I created this strong woman in the videos, and that was a part of her character, having her hair down.”
“Dance Apocalyptic” is the latest release from Monáe’s forthcoming album, The Electric Lady, available September 10 via Atlantic Records.
The Electric Lady is the follow-up to Monáe’s debut album, The ArchAndroid, which was released in 2010. The highly underrated album included the singles “Tightrope” and “Cold War.”
