R&B transcends more than just the radio sector as R&B stars shed light on R&B in a platform that is refreshing for music lovers to see. R&B singers Jennifer Hudson, Jacob Latimore, Mary J. Blige, and Tyrese sing in the new musical drama “Black Nativity,” which is set to hit theaters on Nov. 27.
Accompanied by elite actors/actresses such as Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett and rap veteran Nas, the recently released trailer for the Fox Searchlight drama shows Langston (Latimore) walking into his mother’s home with distraught written all over her face and an eviction notice lying on the coffee table as Latimore utters, “What’s wrong? We’ve been evicted?”
Latimore’s struggling mother, Naima (Hudson), can barely make ends meet and send Latimore to Harlem, N.Y. to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged grandparents (Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett). “We barely even know them,” declares Latimore to Hudson as he questions if his very existence is what destroyed his family.
As Latimore explores the coming-of-age pains and Hudson tries to fulfill her role as a mother, the one-minute and 30-second trailer reveals values of faith, healing, family, inspiration and passion. Through R&B renditions of such songs as “Silent Night,” belted out by powerhouse vocalist Hudson, these values are reflected through the Christmas season.
This film is a contemporary adaptation of Langston Hughes’ 1961 gospel-song play of the birth of Jesus and was one of the first plays written by an African-American to be staged Off-Broadway.
