In the last year, Jill Scott has been officially “booked” in the acting world. From her recent roles in Steel Magnolias to Baggage Claim, the “Blessed” artist shows no signs of slowing down.
Scott’s latest gig is playing James Brown‘s wife in his new biopic, Get On Up. Directed by Tate Taylor (“The Help”), the storyline has been written specifically for the “Golden” songstress.
The biopic will focus on the life and career of Brown (played by actor Chadwick Boseman) — from his childhood in Georgia to becoming the Godfather of Soul. It will also touch on Brown’s personal and professional trials and tribulations, including his drug addiction and financial struggles.
The cameras start rolling this month, and the movie will be released in theaters on October 17, 2014.
In music news, Scott released her last album, The Light of the Sun, on June 21, 2011. The album featured Anthony Hamilton (“So In Love”), Doug E. Fresh (“All Cried Out Redux”), and Paul Wall (“So Gone“).
Speaking on her album, Scott told Interview Magazine, “I feel like more of myself than I’ve ever been, having this freedom, choosing a company that is supportive and understanding, that will distribute my music—it feels very exciting to me. I worked on the project for about a year and a half, and I worked with some incredible musicians. We had so much fun! I call it ‘blacking out.'”
