Throughout 2013 R&B artists like John Legend (July) and Janelle Monáe (October/November) have graced the cover of UPTOWN Magazine. Now it’s Toni Braxton and Babyface turn as they open up about their “Love, Marriage & Divorce” album in the December issue of the African American publication.
In their cover story, Braxton credits Edmonds for her early success in the music world. “One of the reasons why I became the success I am today is because of Babyface,” said Braxton. “He saw the vision at ‘Hello.’ He’s the one who said, ‘Let’s put her on the Boomerang ‘soundtrack.’ So he introduced me to the world!”
Later, Braxton shared her reasons of why she wanted to retire from the music industry earlier this year. “I was depressed over where my career was going. I was also down with my health,” said Braxton.
However, her long-time collaborator, Babyface didn’t think it was time just yet as he has felt the same too. Although he stayed driven by one thing – music. “The music is what drives us to begin with. So I don’t think I ever lost sight of that.”
Along with talking about getting Toni back in love with music, Babyface spoke on wanting their duets album “Love, Marriage & Divorice” to showcase more of Toni’s talent than his own. “Most of the album I did in Toni’s key,” said Babyface.
“So I did more compromising in terms of trying to figure out the keys, trying to figure out how to sing. Our voices are pretty different from one another in terms of keys, but it ended up working out really well. My main thing was for Toni to shine like she should.”
