Beyoncé’s ‘Drunk In Love’ Edited By Radio Station For Offensive Lyrics

Does Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love” have too many ‘drunken’ lyrics for one’s taste? It seems so according to a radio station that refuses to play the original version of the smash hit.

The Billboard Hot 100 Jay-Z assisted single is stirring up some controversy for airplay. With the track’s raw and crude lyrics, one U.K. radio station does not like the message that some of the lyrics could potentially represent (mainly concerning Jay-Z’s verse). U.K. radio station, Bang Radio, announced this week that it would only play an edited version of “Drunk in Love.”

Jay-Z’s verse, “Now eat the cake, Anna Mae/I said eat the cake Anna Mae,” referring to a line from the movie “What’s Love Got To Do With It” where the character Anna Mae is forced to eat by her husband, seems to be the issue.

“The lyrics controversially imitate a scene of severe domestic violence within the film displaying promotion of domestic violence against women,” said the station’s CEO Jennifer Ogole. “In this light Bang refuses to play the song lyrics from henceforth on our station.”

Ogole states that she believes in the unity of women and social equality. Bang Radio feels they are making the best decision for their audience and the content of the station. Will other stations follow suit and will this sway the positioning of “Drunk in Love” on the U.K. charts?

In other news, Beyonce and Jay-Z will perform at the 56th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, January 26. Will they perform “Drunk in Love”?
