Before capping off 2013, Bridget Kelly released her second EP “Cut To…Bridget Kelly” in December. The six-track project features songs like “Special Delivery,” “Goosebumps” and “Coca1n3 Heartbreak.”
In a recent interview with the Roc Nation artist, she told us the next single could between the two latter tunes. “I’ve gotten a lot of amazing responses but mostly ‘Goosebumps’ and ‘Coca1n3 Heartbreak’ have generated the most response. That’s very exciting.”
In August 2013, Kelly told This Is RnB the next single would be “Goosebumps.” However it wasn’t released as the follow-up to Kendrick Lamar assisted-track “Street Dreamin.”
In fact, Kelly noted that picking the next single isn’t at the top of her to do list. “We’re shooting videos now and trying to map out the concept now and just put stuff out,” said Kelly. “I don’t think picking an actually single is even on the table yet. I’m just going to start releasing material and let everybody pick what they love the most.”
In addition to talking about singles, we played an R&B edition of “Would You Rather.” Kelly stated her goal for 2014 is to collaborate with more artists, which became a perfect transition for the first question of doing duet with Monica or Brandy. “Brandy,” she said. “She’s one of my favorite singers. I studied her in high school. Her vocal arrangement, her adlibs and just the placement of her notes — she’s a monster.”
Next question, we asked if she would rather make out with Usher or Tank? “Can I say Trey Songz? I don’t want to make out with either….they’re somebody’s dad,” said Kelly. “And I say Trey because he rips his clothes off on stage and I’m all for that.”
Mary J. Blige’s “My Life” album on a desert island or Faith Evans “Faith” album? ” ‘My Life’ hands down,” she said. “I have memories attached to those songs on [“My Life”] like “Be With You” and so many others that speak to my life.”
Nicki Minaj on your debut album or Lil’Kim? “At this point Nicki Minaj,” said Kelly. “If it was the 90’s, I would take [“Hardcore”] Lil’Kim. But even Nicki [Minaj], I need old Nicki. I don’t want the “Super Bass” one — I need that verse on “Monster” where she bodied everyone else on that record.”
Lastly, we asked if she rather release a single that touches someone but only sells 10,000 copies or a single that doesn’t have much lyrical thought and sell a million copies? “I would rather write a song that has no thought process behind it and sell a million copies,” laughed Kelly. “There isn’t anything wrong with doing a top 40 dance song,” she said. “Ultimately you can write both. Me knowing myself, if I can make a million dollars, talking about absolutely nothing, chances are I can write a song that touch one person.”
