With his debut album set to arrive April 15, R&B newcomer August Alsina begins his promotional trail early with a visit to New York’s Hot 97. The interview began with radio personalities Ebro and Cipha praising Alsina on “started from the bottom” success and for bringing his honest perspective to rhythm & blues.

While the New Orleans native has become a new voice for R&B music in the streets, he still questions how candid he should be in his music. “As artists we get judged,” says Alsina. “It was a struggle for me to kinda’ give all of myself like that —  but at the same time I always say, I’d be cheating myself, I’d be cheating the people because it’s so many people out here like me that can relate to that.”

Following his spill about the honesty of his music, he discussed what he’s learned about himself and his fans while on the “2 Good to be T.R.U. Tour” with 2 Chainz and Pusha T. He also talked about why he doesn’t want a monogamist relationship right now. “I’m a lover,” says Alsina. “But I’m a lover when I want to be. It take something special for me to be like ‘Yeah, that’s me right there.”

In addition to talking about love, he shared why one label exec wanted him to change his name to “August September.” He also gave Ebro and Cipha a live rendition of his new single “Make It Home.”
