Kelly Rowland has done a little spring cleaning. The “Motivation” singer has confirmed that she ended her contract with her label, Universal Republic.
“I feel like right now, I just needed something new and I’ve earned the right to make my own choices and make my own decisions,” Rowland told Marc Lamont Hill of HuffPost Live. “I wish them well, they wish me well. No hard feelings. I just needed a fresh, new start.”
Rowland also confirmed that she had just started working on her fifth studio album. “A fifth album is coming. I’m in the studio right now. I just actually got started last week. It’s been wonderful so far — a fresh new spin on everything with writers, producers, just being inspired, just creativity.”

When asked about what kind of sounds and feelings Rowland wants on her next album, she said, “I’m thinking different horns, certain drums, these flutes that I heard — I know it sounds crazy. I’ve been inspired by the queens that have gone before us.” Rowland went on to praise Diana Ross. “She is the queen,” Rowland said. “She is the true definition of a fabulista, always inspiring — not just myself but so many women for so long.”
Although Rowland is working on a new album, she hasn’t inked a new record deal yet. “There are different offers on the table,” she said. “I just want to see what it feels like. I’m just in the studio on my own and just having a really good time just being creatively free.”
