The theme for our March 2014 Throwback Thursday is “Unsung Female Voices of the ’80s.” We end this month’s series with “Fool’s Paradise,” a soulful gem by Meli’sa Morgan.
Morgan co-wrote and co-produced “Fool’s Paradise” with Lesette Wilson. The song was released as the final single from Morgan’s 1986 debut album, Do Me Baby.
“I never said that I would be your everything / But you know that I love you, baby / And it’s gonna be such a shame / When you start living in this / Fool’s paradise,” Morgan sings.
“Fool’s Paradise” spent 12 weeks on the Billboard R&B Songs chart, peaking at No. 24.
Although “Fool’s Paradise” didn’t make a strong mark on the charts, it did impact one artist: Mary J. Blige. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul interpolated “Fool’s Paradise” in the chorus of Jay-Z’s 1996 song “Can’t Knock The Hustle.”
Do Me Baby also included Morgan’s splendid cover of Prince‘s “Do Me Baby.”
