Beyoncé: ‘There Is a Double Standard When It Comes to Sexuality’

Beyoncé serves face on the cover of OUT Magazine’s May 2014 Power issue.

In her interview with the gay and lesbian publication, Beyoncé shares her thoughts on the double standard for women to express themselves as sexual beings. “There is a double standard when it comes to sexuality that still persists,” says Beyoncé. “Men are free and women are not. That is crazy.”

She also encourages women to not be afraid of expressing their sexuality. “There is unbelievable power in ownership and women should own their sexuality,” she says.

With songs like “Drunk in Love” and “Partition,” Beyoncé has no problems with expressing her sexuality. Although she’s a public figure, she believes any woman — regardless of who they are — should be able to express themselves sexually.

“The old lessons of submissiveness and fragility made us victims,” she says. “Women are so much more than that. You can be a businesswoman, a mother, an artist, and a feminist — whatever you want to be — and still be a sexual being. It’s not mutually exclusive.”

OUT Magazine’s Power issue will be available at newsstands later this month.
