Joe Talks New Music, Relationships and His R&B Counterparts on ‘Sway in the Morning’

R&B vocalist Joe gets a head start on the promotional trek for his forthcoming album “Bridges,” with a visit to Sway in the Morning on Shade 45.

The in-depth interview started with Sway showing his appreciation to Joe for having a musical discography that has allowed him to sing songs to his special women. He also applauded the soulful crooner for always respecting females throughout his career — whether it was through his songs or visuals. “You celebrated love,” said Sway. “You didn’t sh-t on women. You didn’t treat them like trash in your videos.”

With over 20 years of experience in the music industry, Joe states he’s comfortable with his position in the world of R&B music. However, when asked about the current state of R&B and male R&B artists like Frank Ocean, The Weeknd and Trey Songz, he feels some have more to prove than others. “R&B is a lane that is wide open,” said Joe. “I don’t think R&B is going go anywhere. I think Frank [Ocean] has a lot more to do to prove that he’s worthy of a certain status in this game.”

Joe feels like Chris Brown is one of the most consistent male R&B artists of the new school. While Sway brought up The-Dream in the conversation, Joe felt like  “The-Dream is so dope but sometimes I think he gets in his own way when it comes to writing music. He gives his best music away as opposed to actually putting it on himself. Some artists sometimes can’t see their own career. They can’t see where they need to be but maybe he’s having fun with it. ”

Along with talking about the state of R&B, the “Signature” artist shared his thoughts on designer Tom Ford, why he’s not a fan of breaking hearts and how is longest committed relationship was only two years.

His new single “Love & Sexy (Part 2)” featuring Kelly Rowland stands at No. 11 on the Billboard Adult R&B Songs chart. Joe’s new album “Bridges” will hit stores and digital retailers on June 24.
