Kem is probably one of the top underrated male R&B singers out there. Since 2003, the Detroit native has consistently provided music enthusiasts with solid R&B music. With his fourth album “Promise To Love,” set to release on August 26, the crooner shares additional information about his new project.
The “Love Calls” singer caught up with Hip Hollywood on the set of his “It’s You” video to talk about his new single and new album. “It pays homage to the Motown sound,” says Kem on the sound of “It’s You.” “It’s kind of a throwback…it’s classic R&B…it’s classic Kem with a little grease in it.”
Kem’s fans can expect to see artistic growth on his forthcoming album. “With every record, I get better,” he says. “My artistry evolves. My songwriting evolves. The process evolves. It’s a special record. Each record I that I do is the best record I’ve done to date. I just really am trying to express my belief in classic R&B and trying to represent the genre in the best way I can.”
One track that Kem is excited about his “Downtown,” which features legendary rapper Snoop Dogg. “Somebody sent me a YouTube clip of Snoop and 2 Chainz singing “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” recalls Kem. “I was really kind of taken aback by the fact that my music was on both he and 2 Chainz’ radar. So the song ‘Downtown,’ it had a space in it for a rapper but I was going to do it myself…but then after I saw that I was like, ‘You know what? Why pretend to be a rapper when you can get a real rapper? And not just any rapper but you can get someone with a legacy, the history and the swagger of Snoop.”
