Mary J. Blige premieres her video for “Whole Damn Year” bringing the powerful emotional ballad to life with a short-film visual.
The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul is always known to bring real life situations that are hard to talk about through in her music. Blige proves no different with her track “Whole Damn Year,” which reflects on trying to move past a difficult experience and repairing yourself and trust in the process.
The powerful video for “Whole Damn Year” plays off the songs emotional lyrics and sets a scenario of a woman scorned from her childhood where her mother was domestically abused. Now an adult, the scarred woman has trust issues with men in fear of the same thing happening to her. It takes a “whole damn year,” if not more, to rebuild herself and her trust from her haunting past and to eventually let a man come into her life.
In the captivating visual, Blige plays the role of a narrator, so to speak, in the short-film music video as she sings the lyrics of the song while the scenes play out.
