Mary J. Blige plans to ease on down the road this winter in the upcoming NBC live adaptation of 1978 musical, The Wiz.
Directed by Kenny Leon, The Wiz Live! will feature the nine-time Grammy-winning artist as Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West. “I can’t wait to watch Mary bring the badness that is Evillene,” said Leon in a press release. “Her talent range is off the charts and I know audiences won’t be able to take their eyes off her.”
Blige has starred in television, films and musicals before including Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Strong Medicine, Rock of Ages and Black Nativity.
Other performers to star in The Wiz Live! include Queen Latifah as the Wiz and Stephanie Mills as Auntie Em. The role of Dorothy has yet to be decided by the network.
The Wiz Live! will premiere on Thursday, December 3 on NBC.
